Mangrove guardians — GCD's continuing commitment to Mumbai's green coastline
"Mumbai's mangroves are not wilderness at the city's edge — they are the city's lungs, its flood shield, and its future. GCD has been standing in their defence, season after season."
Since our founding, GCD (Green Community Development) has run one of Mumbai's most consistent grassroots mangrove conservation programmes. What began as a single clean-up drive along the Bandra coastline has grown into a sustained, multi-season initiative that brings together students, corporate volunteers, local communities, and environmental advocates — month after month, tide after tide.
Mumbai's mangroves span over 66 sq km of coastline, acting as a natural buffer against flooding, a carbon sink, and a nursery for marine biodiversity. Yet they face relentless pressure from encroachment, pollution, and plastic waste. GCD's programme works on three fronts simultaneously: cleaning existing mangrove belts, supporting ecological restoration, and building long-term public awareness so that communities become permanent custodians — not just visitors.
What we do on the ground.
Shoreline and creek clean-ups: Scheduled at low tide, volunteers remove plastic, debris, and invasive material from mangrove zones across Bandra, Versova, Vikhroli, and beyond.
Saplings and restoration planting. In partnership with local authorities and forest departments, we support native mangrove species restoration in degraded stretches of coastline.
School and college outreach - Students earn certificates and field experience through our drives — bridging environmental education with lived action.
Corporate CSR partnerships - We work with companies whose teams want purposeful, impactful volunteering — not just an activity, but a contribution that lasts.
Community awareness walks. Guided walks and storytelling sessions help coastal residents understand what mangroves do — and why protecting them is protecting themselves.
Next drive — join us.
Stand for Mumbai's mangroves · May 2025 Sunday, 3 May · 7:15 AM (low tide) · Bandstand, Bandra West.
A morning of cleaning, restoration, and awareness. Open to all — students, families, professionals, first-timers.
Every drive we run is one link in a longer chain. GCD's mangrove programme is not a one-day event — it is a living commitment to the coastline that Mumbai depends on. Whether you join us once or return every season, you become part of that chain.
